Schodack Central School District - Castleton Elementary School Expansion

Castleton Elementary School Expansion

Schodack Central School District
Project: Castleton Elementary School Expansion
Location: Schodack, New York (Rensselaer County)
Architect: Stieglitz Snyder Architecture
Construction Budget: $10.5 Million

Through careful planning, the Schodack Central School District has created an optimum elementary setting within the constraints of an existing District building.  Challenges included maintaining the original 1923 school building (with great community sentiment), correcting the inefficiencies of later additions, and meeting the requirements of contemporary bus drop-off / pick-up within a very confined existing site.

The new two-story addition houses 24 new classrooms, gymnasium with basketball court, larger media center, cafeteria, entrance lobby situated for efficient security, elevator, Math and Reading support rooms.

The comprehensive new addition optimizes classroom efficiency and used existing foundations wherever possible.  Support activities occur in the existing 1923 building and are arranged to promote passive surveillance of visitors.  Careful consideration was given to construction phasing, as portions of the building remained open throughout construction.
