Buffalo Canal Side
Buffalo, New York
Project: Buffalo Waterfront Canal Side
Location: Buffalo, New York
Architect: Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects
Construction Budget: $294 million
The Buffalo Waterfront was once a bustling industrial port that marked the Western terminus of the Erie Canal and served as a major gateway to the west. “Canal Side” will reestablish the City’s relationship with the waterfront. The new harbor at the foot of Main Street positions the HSBC Arena as a waterfront site, the new Commercial Slip celebrates the history of the Erie Canal, and the Prime Slip brings water into the center of the development. Main Street will once again be a vibrant public environment through the reintroduction of cars, a new central light rail station, and a bridge that will connect Downtown to the Outer Harbor where Buffalo’s renaissance will continue with future development.
EE&K was enlisted by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation to create a development plan that will bring life back to the water in the City of Buffalo. The “Canal Side” Plan will create new uses and attractions around a series of world class public spaces. Anchoring the project is the existing HSBC Arena, home to the NHL Buffalo Sabres. Also, several mixed use blocks with continuous street level retail, new residential development, and a new hotel are planned. A new museum celebrating the history of the Erie Canal will offer a cultural draw that complements the rest of the development. Parking is provided on each block of the development, and is designed to be convenient but also minimally apparent from the street level environment
