Alfred State College

Student Leadership Center

Alfred State College's Student Leadership Center designed by William Rawn & Associates, Architects, Inc. and Bergmann Associates achieved LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBD).  The approximately 60,000 square foot building houses a mixed program of campus club and student government offices, public gathering spaces, food services, a climbing wall, a radio station and a "dirty space" for students to engage in engineering projects.

The facility incorporates many sustainable design features including a geothermal heating system, energy recovery wheels for HVAC, sunshade louvers, rainwater harvesting, a green roof and water efficient plumbing fixtures.  Additionally, interior finishes have high recycled content and low or no VOCs.  Emphasis was placed on the use of recycled and regional construction materials, as well as management of the construction waste stream.

The Student Leadership Center was designed to a standard that created real energy and resource efficiency.

  • High efficiency lighting reduced lighting power density from an ASHRAE 90.1-2007 standard of 1.2 W/sf to a design of .75 W/sf which produces a yearly energy savings of 83,307 kWh.
  • Energy Recovery wheels increase natural gas savings by an estimated 19,700 therms each year by collecting heat from exhaust air and transferring it to the supply air side.
  • High Efficiency plumbing fixtures will reduce water usage by an estimated 273,700 Gal per year from baseline cases and the Center hopes to reduce water use by over 35% over LEED standards.
  • The project is targeting at 25% or more energy reduction goal below ASHRAE 90.1-2007 and the NYS code standards.

"An astonishing facility like this offers unparalleled opportunities to do great things, and we are fully committed to maximizing its potential." - Alfred State Interim President Valerie Nixon.
